Colonial House Colors: Make a Classic Home Your Own Style!

Columns accent the covered porch and blend old and new to create a friendly gathering space. This classic Colonial home needed a few touch-ups to achieve the ultimate curb appeal. Because the front yard is short on space, the homeowners had limited options for expanding outward. In place of a full front porch, a new portico adds emphasis to the front entryway. With its spacious front yard, this Colonial home had plenty of outdoor space to work with. Decorative molding over the front door added charming emphasis, but the homeowners wanted a grander entrance.

Though grand in size, this Colonial home sorely needed updating. Faded yellow siding and emerald green shutters exposed the home's age. With untended landscaping, the outdoor spaces were underused and unappealing. The Colonial-style renovation upgraded the plain portico into a spacious covered porch, which allows room for plenty of outdoor furniture. New columns replicate the original style, so the addition looks like it's always been there. Brick steps lined with lush landscaping beckon guests toward the entrance.

We all know that this is no quick job, so choosing the right color scheme is crucial to save time, money, and be 100% satisfied with the end result. Much like the architectural era that succeeded it—the Queen Anne period of the 1860s through early 1900s—Colonial homes often were painted vibrant shades of peach or light pink. Whimsical and fun, these colors are quintessential representations of a time when high art and fashion ruled the world.

Aint the front door white to match for an understated look, or a glossy navy or black for an elegant finish. Federal style emerged shortly after 1776 and was the dominant style of the new Republic. The style was prevalent in affluent port cities on the east coast such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Savannah. Homes built in this style were still symmetrical, with a lighter and more delicate character.

Light gray paint on this stucco-clad Dutch Colonial coordinates with the shingles on the home's prominent gambrel roof. A splash of red against a traditional white-and-black backdrop focuses attention on this home's elegant, portico-covered entry. Our friendly house painters will deliver your quality paint job on time and on budget. In the same vein as the peach palette, light pinks and dusty roses often were utilized by families that wanted to show their sophistication and class. These ageless shades speak to romance, nature, and seduction, as well as reflect the aristocracy.

A rich dark blue with greenish undertones, it has a high tinting strength but is changeable when exposed to light and air. For a more modern twist on this classic style, you could try darker neutrals like gray, or a warmer brown, paired with a pop of color on the trim using green or deep red. Below we showcase a series of different colonial houses, mostly the saltbox style which stems from the British colonial style. While most are historic, the second example is a new house built in the colonial style.

At the time, the property consisted of 100 acres which included two islands. In 1983 William and Mary Ann Dykes purchased the home and started restoring it to its 18th Century glory. Ho Chi Minh Presidential Palace, Hanoi Vietnam is an example of French colonial architecture. Historic Hammond-Harwood House is one of the premiere remaining houses from the British Colonial era, began construction in 1774 in Annapolis, MD.

Keep it simple with a creamy white trim that will really showcase the natural tones in the brick. This Colonial home addition boasts of the same brick, decorative railings, window muntins, and trim work found on the original home. It provides extra space indoors as well as a larger walkout area on the upper level. Black shutters and crisp white trim stand out attractively against the red brick siding.

So interesting to learn about these historic color schemes and a wonderful resource for those wanting to highlight the beautiful historic story of their home. One of the features I love about this style is that with the large windows and lots of glass, it can easily accommodate a more contemporary style. With such a classic design style, it can also lean towards a more traditional aesthetic.

Though keeping with the streamlined style typical of Colonial homes, this facade lacked dimension and personality. A narrow roof overhang and simple entrance resulted in a missed opportunity for outdoor living. A front porch remodel added architectural detail to create a more inviting exterior space. The exteriors of Greek revival homes were typically painted white, off-white, gray or ochre, mimicking the natural stone of Greek temples. Exterior shades were painted in a contrasting dark green or black. It's not hard to find colonial paint colors for historic homes if you know what style of colonial home you have and some basic knowledge about this era in history.

Dark Blue

Nick made sure all the areas that required maintenance painting were carefully addressed. He even replaced our house numbers which was a way better option than painting them. He also meticulously worked with Diego to reinstall two shutters that were already partially detached.

Multiple coats with the highest quality materials looks beautiful! We wanted to replace our original siding and decided to change it to vinyl shake! The replacement doors and windows were installed efficiently and are so beautiful. We selected Adelphia based on their competitive pricing and excellent reviews on Angie's List and Yelp. George worked with us at every step along the way to make sure we were satisfied. The contractors that Adelphia use are careful, professional, punctual, and do excellent work!

Light Beige

Pale gray paint softens the exterior of this large new build, while a teal door and some red flowers dotting the front yard landscaping adds a smidgen of color. Interior designer Susan Spath of San Diego-based Kern & Co. added blue-gray paint to the wooden shutters of this Spanish style home that illustrate how versatile the nearly neutral shade can be. This brick home from A Beautiful Mess has a soft white exterior that give it a fresh look, while pale pink double doors add a dose of personality. Mindy Gayer Design Co. collaborated with Dana Webber Design Group and Fairbank Construction Company to build this Puget Sound vacation home. The front entryway to the home is defined by warm off-white paint that gives the sprawling facade some dimension and contrasts with the darker siding and mixed tone wood accents. Sandra Foster used flat white paint on her tiny Victorian cottage in the Catskills of New York to highlight its fairy tale charm, while a green-colored roof blends in with the woodsy surroundings.
